About.me Launched: another platform we don't need?

About.me is now live, on an invitation-only basis, and allows you to create an online profile of yourself and your interests. Sounds familiar? Sounds like a waste of time, having yet another page which may never get noticed? Well, this service is touted as a springboard platform to lots of other social networks - a meta-profile, if you like. And you can add your own URLs and RSS feeds too, so custom web pages are all part of the mix. It also has a dashboard, so you can actually tell whether your profile is getting any traction.
