Social Graph API - Google

This is a service defined and provided by Google. Google stores public information on users and their connections to other users; this information is provided by participating websites. A user on one website will then be able to inherit their profile and user connections from other websites they subscribe to, effectively ending up with one synchronised profile across all participating websites.

As with any other web-based initiative, it requires a critical mass of uptake, from website strategists, to make it work. Users of course will love it and will only see an improvement in the current state of isolated, stale profiles.
