These pay-monthly plans have a good amount of data (at least 750MB per month), matching the demands of normal iPhone usage.

12-month contract for £16/month, with 750MB data.
1-month contract for £18/month, with 750MB data.
Tethering costs £5 for 500MB.
EU roaming costs £3/day (as part of your data allowance) or £0.46/MB. US roaming costs £3/MB.

3 (three.co.uk)

12-month contract for £9.90/month, with 1GB data.
1-month contract for £12.90/month, with unlimited data.
Tethering is £5.11/month for a 2GB allowance. One the more expensive 'One' plan, tethering is free.
EU roaming costs £5/day (possibly as part of your data allowance) or £0.46/MB. US roaming costs £3/MB.

giffgaff

£10 goodybag lasts a month and has 1GB data.
Tethering is allowed (and free) on fixed-data goodybags only, and apaprently the iPhone also needs to be jailbroken.
EU roaming costs £0.45/MB. US roaming costs £5/MB.

O2

1-month contract for £26/month, with 750MB data.
12-month contract for £21/month, with 1GB data.
Tethering is not allowed.
EU roaming costs £0.46/MB. US roaming costs £6/MB.

Virgin Mobile

EU roaming costs between £3 (for 10MB) and £20 (for 250MB), and lasts for 3 months. US roaming costs £5/MB.
