Solar Panel 240W ET Solar Monocrystalline PV from envirergy - £700.
Water Immersion Heater 24 Volt 600W from The Windmill Shop - £40.
24V 300W Invertor from Maplin - £40.
24V 600W Heater from Wind2Watts.co.uk - £40.

We could use the PV array to power the immersion heater, and have it switch over to the DC-AC invertor when the hot water tank is up to temperature.
