Adding a Window to your Garage

This isn't necessarily as straightforward as it seems. We'd like to put a window in right next to our oil tank. Our local Building Control (North Norfolk District Council) says that there must be 6 feet between an oil tank and an ordinary window. However, there is no mininum distance if:
  • The window is hardwood framed
  • The glass is wired ('Georgian Wired')
  • The Glass is held in place by screws, not just putty
These requirements provide a half-hour fire retardancy, to protect the oil tank in case there's a fire in the garage.

Additionally, a garage over 30sq.m comes under building regulations, so plans must be submitted and a fee duly paid.
