SD Card nightmare on the Garmin Edge 1000

I bought a second-hand Garmin Edge 1000 recently, as a Christmas present, and it's a nice device with a handy big screen. It quickly transpired though that the map screen was missing all the minor roads (UK's B roads and smaller), which made it unusable. I attempted a maps update using the Garmin Express app, but it told me that there wasn't enough space: the map update needed 9GB, and a quick filesystem check revealed that there was only 500MB free. Garmin Express stated that it could continue if I inserted an SD card into the device, so I dug out a spare 32GB card, plugged it in - and the device screen went blank. To cut a long story short, having an SD card present made the Garmin stop dead, and it wouldn't start up from scratch either. I tried another SD card, with the same result.

I had to give up on the idea of updating the maps using Garmin Express. The approach that worked was to download an alternative map file (from openstreetmap) and copy it to the spare internal storage on the Garmin. (By the way, there was just enough room if I removed a few large files that didn't seem important!) The result is that the device's map screen now shows all roads (plus trails, woodland, etc), and it doesn't look any worse than the official maps that Garmin provides.
