West Suffolk Cross

Location: Hardwick Heath, Bury St. Edmunds, Bury Saint Edmunds, United Kingdom

Hardwick Heath has been used for CX racing, many years ago, and West Suffolk Wheelers did an excellent job of returning to this venue for lots of grass / woodland action. A bridleway cutting through the course meant that there were two compulsory dismount points (with planks), but a 6" diameter log was thrown in for good measure. Most of the adult riders (and some youth) were prepared to jump the log, but there were some unfortunate spills at this point. The weather was breezy and chilly; early drizzle in the under-10s and under-12s races died away, and the constant threat of rain failed to materialise. Consequently the grass sections were soft but didn't deteriorate much. With large rider numbers in all the races there was lots of close competition, and the marshals and judges were kept busy!
