Spectating at the World Road Race Champs in Yorkshire

Friday: Under-23 men's race

I rode up from Holbeach, saw the race pass through Thorne, then rode through afternoon rain to see them at the finish in Harrogate.

Saturday: Elite women's race

After heavy overnight rain I rode north on wet and flooded roads from Harrogate to Lofthouse, watching the race split into pieces after the main summit. I then headed back to Harrogate for the finish.

Sunday: Elite men's race

Sunday featured heavy rain throughout, and I cut short my planned ride. It turned out that the race organisers had done the same, missing out on the worst (and presumably flooded) climbs of the North York moors. I watched a blur of rain jackets pas by in Masham, then the same in Harrogate on the finishing circuit, before heading to Selby for the night.

Monday: heading back south

On dry roads and with a bit of wind assistance I made my way east to the Humber Bridge, linking up with some other cyclists who were also heading back from the World's. We parted company after crossing the bridge, and I had a pleasant ride through the Lincolnshire Wolds before a gruelling cross-wind effort through the Fens.
