Tour of Cambridgeshire: Gran Fondo

Location: Peterborough Arena, The East of England Showground, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire PE2 6XE

This event was quite exhilarating, on 80 miles of closed roads. We passed through many villages full of cheering residents, lots of exposed fenland, a tricky concrete track, an industrial estate and even a disused runway! It was made more interesting for me when my rear tyre popped off the rim a minute before the start, and in the five minutes it took me to fix it, thousands of leisure riders had streamed past. I spent the first hour in the red, on hilly roads, flying past everyone in a desperate attempt to get back with the race group. Fortunately I came across an equally determined rider and we worked together riding a 2-up time trial to eventually catch the main race bunch. I then punctured in the last few miles, so rode across the line on a flat tyre - finishing 409th overall.
