A quick scan of Autotrader reveals that ?5K can typically buy you:-

  • A 3-year-old Vauxhall Zafira with 70,000 miles
  • A 4-5-year-old Zafira with 40-50,000 miles
  • A 5-year-old Ford Galaxy with 80,000 miles
  • A 7-year-old Galaxy with 50,000 miles
These are Trade (Forecourt) prices, and are a rough approximation of what the dealers are quoting. What might seem from the figures to be a bargain might well turn out to be a lemon! But we can clearly see that the larger Galaxy is only really in our budget on highish-mileage older vehicles, compared to the Zafira.

What we really need to do is to see how much the oldest versions of these models are worth, so get an idea of long-term depreciation
