After a flying start right on schedule for a sub-4-hr ride, John blew up at 70 miles, forcing him to stop for food. At one point his margin over eventual winner Dave Gill was 2.5 minutes, but as fatigue set in he rapidly slipped down the field.
A burst in the last 15 miles gave him a time almost equal to his PB, and has highlighted some important weaknesses to be rectified for the BUSA-100 the following weekend.
Julii Brainard was there to keep him moving, handing out drinks on the fly.
