Scrap VAT on Oil: Petition

James Cameron has started a petition, to reduce or scrap the VAT on heating oil. The petition closes on 29 October 2008, and so far has had only 52 signatures. In more detail:
The recent fluctuation in the price of oil to record levels has had an affect on how much poeple are having to pay to heat their houses. People who are under 60 do not get a heating allowance and are struggling financially to heat their families. Please can the government look into abolishing the vat on heating oil so honest hard working people can at least afford to keep their children warm this winter.
Okay, a bit soppy, but it's a simple message. Ironically, the main reason that heating oil prices fluctuate so much is that there is so little tax on it already (5% VAT is all that the consumer pays). Other oil-based fuels such as petrol are heavily taxed, so that the crude oil price is only a small factor in how much it costs to the consumer. Still, every little helps, and right now oil for home heating is costing a fortune.

To add vat to any heating fuel is rediculous especially with todays prices and people being unable to keep warm. Oil has gone up 600% in twelve years and the only winner is the government. Heating oil users usually have no option but to use the unbelievably expensive fuel - we are being exploited!

YES SCRAP THE FUEL TAX, WE GET TAXED WHEN WE EARN IT AND TAXED WHEN WE SPEND IT.

For pensioners even with the extra fuel payment it is not covering the price of heating a home with oil. We are in the house more than working people and feel the cold more, this last six months we have paid over ?1000 for oil. VAT should be abolished.
