Shelves with a difference

Instead of building plain shelves all the same length, how about an interesting pattern?

Create a zig-zag effect by creating a solid box with a back (using plywood) and then simple screw each shelf to the side and the back. This configuration is not as strong, but allows you to stack tall things if required.
