Adding to the collection of bikes in our garage (but hopefully allowing the sale of a couple of others), we have bought a pair of cyclo-cross bikes. The Ridley X-Ride is for Dan, on a 52cm frame, and it will also make a pretty decent road bike (with a switch of wheels, of course). My new bike is a Specialized Crux Elite (56cm frame) with a Sora groupset.
One fundamental problem that Sora has for cyclocross is that your thumbs can rub against the gearshift buttons when your hands are gripping the hoods. This would be easy to avoid on the road, but off-road riding makes frequent thumb-rub inevitable. Engaging the button when on the drops (for upshifting at the rear, or downshifting at the front) is also much more difficult with this button gear-shifter. An upgrade to 105 or Tiagra is unfortunately inevitable.
