Calculate your Child's BMI

Taken from a Times online article, May 28, 2004:

CALCULATE YOUR CHILD'S BMI*

  • Measure your child in metres and multiply his/her height by itself to give you the height squared. Start this process only when your child has reached 18 months.

  • Measure the child's weight in kilograms.

    * Divide the weight by the height squared to find out your child's Body Mass Index.

Plot this information on a BMI chart, available from your GP, health visitor or school nurse, and keep track of your child's development. Repeat this process every six months. For further information, consult the Child Growth Foundation's website: www.health-for-all-children.co.uk

    *Body Mass Index
  • The BMI formula applies to any age group, and it is only a rough guide to being overweight. It does specifically not work well for short or tall people.
