This isn't programming in the traditional sense of the word, but Scratch (from MIT - a USA academy) is a colourful way of encouraging people of all ages to learn the core coding paradigms. You can get going really easily, by dragging different code patterns into the design area.
Don't forget to start it all off with a "Green flag" event! You need some sort of event to start your program, and clicking the green flag is the standard event to use. It's a shame that this event isn't put on a new design area automatically; the last thing we want is for new coders to get stuck just trying to run their program!
You can explore countless programs written by other people, but the best thing is really to dive in and start creating your own: Scratch Project Editor - Get Started.
