I found a huge amount on my lupine that had so many aphids, are they a beneficial bug? Is it a Soldier bug as Pip A'Ness said?

I'd put money on it being a Soldier Bug: http://www.raywilsonbirdphotography.co.uk/Galleries/Invertebrates/Coleoptera/Cantharidae.html
