Immersion Heaters: Safety Thermal Cutout

To avoid the danger of your cold water tank accidentally filling with hot water due to a faulty immersion heater element, check your hot water tank (NOT the cold water tank!). The immersion heater element has a black plastic cap over it, and the cap should say 'Safety Thermal Cutout' on it. If it doesn't, get central heating plumber in to check it out.

Check your cold water tank as well; the water should be icy cold, especially this time of year. Also try to work out its location relative to rooms below it in the house. Even cold water may present a danger if the cold water tank suddenly fails, so ideally the tank would be located above a hallway or landing.
