On 12 March 2007, Dr Richard Aldridge shall be giving a talk to the IET (Anglian Coastal Network). It is at Pinebanks, Harvey Lane, Norwich at 7PM for a 7:30 start.

The talk concerns the perceived energy crisis that is looming, and shall look at energy supply and consumption for the future. The aim is for a balanced approach of reduced consumption and improved range of supply options.

Richard Aldridge lectured at UEA whilst I was an undergrad there, and always impressed me for his clarity of thinking and his pragmatism in problem solving. It should be quite an educating and interesting talk.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The UK Government aspires to generate 20% of UK electricity from renewable energy sources by the year 2020. In practice, this will be connected as "distributed generation", primarily domestic and industrial CHP schemes, wind farms and diesel power generation, in addition to other renewables such as hydro and solar PV.

This event aims to provide engineers with an appreciation of the technical issues relating to distributed generation. The topics cover the principal prime movers, to generators, their control and protection, through to connection to the distribution network.

Industrial speakers will present examples of actual installations, covering in detail fault calculations, protection and earthing of generators and generator sizing. The main technologies are CHP, wind and diesel. This includes connection of distributed generation, and its commercial issues.

Continued professional development shall also be catered for.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING:

  • Your own copy of Engineering Recommendation G.59 and have its application explained through numerous case studies.
  • To hear leading experts in the field, including industrial experiences and case studies.
  • To visit the New and Renewable Energy Centre.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

All engineers involved or potentially involved with distributed generation from organisations such as generating companies, regional electricity companies, renewable energy groups, consultants, industries with their own generation capacity, academics, researchers and manufacturers. In particular, those who require fist hand explanations of the application of Engineering Recommendation G.59 should benefit greatly from this course.

Alistair Darling of the DTI today released The Energy Review, looking at energy production issues in the short to medium term. It includes the usual rhetoric on renewable energy, and suggests that nuclear energy should be given some priority too.

The paper called for a big increase in the amount of energy generated from renewable sources such as wind, the sun and the sea, from the current four per cent to around 20 per cent.

The BBC has produced an Electricity Calculator to let you decide what the UK's energy mix should be by 2020

We've just found a company that does rainwater harvesting - RainHarvesting.co.uk, part of The Green Shop. The system uses rainwater for washing, toilets and garden, via underground tank storage. It all looks very expensive, but we asked for a quote anyway!

The IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) is examining the possibility of upgrading the building’s thermal performance, reducing overall energy consumption and carbon emissions, and improving building controls, using leading edge approaches and materials including renewable technologies. See their Energy and Environment page for more details.

I hope this project stretches to re-use as well as energy-efficient installations; we mustn't forget the energy and resource that goes into product manufacture.

Today is Earth Day! It's on the March Equinox (when the night and day are approximately the same - 12 hours each), and is a time to think how we can best protect our planet. Google has made a special Title Image, shown here. For best results see the Google Earth Day Search Results.

The US Goverment has an Earth Day Page, although it does suggest that George W. Bush has some kind of environmental morals. You might find The BBC's Earth Day page more palatable..
