Our latest order from Virgin

This latest order was handled over the phone by a very friendly and helpful advisor. We specified that we wanted high alcohol content, fruity reds and medium dry whites. We also wanted only 4-5 whites in a case of 13, and that it should cost ?60 - ?70 after our account discount. The advisor explained that stronger wines are usually found in the warmer climates, described some suitable wines, took our preferences away and this is what arrived two days later:

  • 2 bottle(s) of Capcanes Mas del Ponts 2002
  • 2 bottle(s) of Miller's Grove Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 02/03
  • 2 bottle(s) of Two Blues Limestone Coast Fleurieu Shiraz 2003
  • 2 bottle(s) of Monos Locos Viognier 2003
  • 2 bottle(s) of Seraphim 2003
  • 2 bottle(s) of Three Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2004

Capcanes Mas del Ponts 2002
(Spain)
Style: Huge Reds
The low-down: Wine of the Year 2004If you love Rioja, but want to at least pretend to try something different for a change, then this Spanish garnacha will help you make the transition with ease. Deep red and bursting with cherry and vanilla lusciousness, this wine from the super-premium new wine region of Montsant near Barcelona goes a treat with a rack of juicy lamb or a succulent T-bone steak. (Vegetarians may enjoy it with lentils.)
Miller's Grove Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 02/03
(Australia)
Style: Full and Fruity Reds
The low-down: The Miller's grove range brings you everything you love about Australian wine in a few affordable bottles. This however, is the private reserve. Choice Cabernet Sauvignon that's still great value for money, but a heavier blackberry slurp that should accompany a great sit-down meal rather than simply glugged on the sofa. Beef stroganoff or lentils work well here.

Two Blues Limestone Coast Fleurieu Shiraz 2003
(Australia)
Style: Full and Fruity Reds
The low-down: The Fleurieu peninsula sticks out a mile on South Australia's Limestone Coast - and this Shiraz sticks out a mile against the local competition. It's a spicy splashdown of blue/red finesse, sort of the colour of shark-infested waters at sundown. A warming winter essential.

Monos Locos Viognier 2003
(Chile)
Style: Fragrant but Dry Whites
The low-down: A chimp off the old block, this 'Crazy Monkeys' white takes a tricky-to-grow traditional French Viognier and makes it right at home in Chile's central valley. Peachy, supple and well rounded - no, not the undercarriage of a baboon, the flavours of this great white that's king of the swingers with fish, chicken and buttery dishes. The perfect excuse to give chardonnay the shove, this wine went down a storm at a charity tasting held by the Scottish Herald.
Seraphim 2003
(Chile)
Style: Huge Reds
The low-down: If you're into cabernet sauvignon, you'll worship this angel of the highest order. From the lofty heights of the Andes mountains in Chile it represents everything that's good about South American wine: the richness of the fruit, the depth of character and above all, the incredible value for money. We think this wine has earned its halo and wings, as it knocks many Clarets at double the price for six and is bliss with roast beef and yorkshire pudding (a combination the Chilean's may have missed!)
Three Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2004
(South Africa)
Style: Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc Style
The low-down: We are pleased to be able to offer you New Zealand quality at South Africa prices with this wine from our South African range that sees some of the most popular grape varieties transformed into exciting wines by SA's up-and-coming winemakers. What does it all mean? Well, fresh, snappy sauvignon flavour by the bucket load which means refreshingly fruity with a lovely citrus zing. Perfect with your seasonal salads.

Monos Locos Sauvignon Blanc 2004
(Chile)
Style: Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc Style
The low-down: Monos Locos - the crazy monkeys. They dance, they jump, they swing - but that's just on the label. Inside the bottle you'll find some of Chile's finest Sauvignon Blanc - and that's the only place you'll find it, as this wine isn't available anywhere else! So toss yourself a salad or go catch a fish because this is one refreshing cheeky monkey you'll go nuts over. Perfect for outdoor drinking, this is a can't go wrong sauvignon blanc
