The Secret History of Social Networking

Most web-conscious people today have a good grasp of what social networking is and how it is used in our everyday lives. But where did it come from? What are the roots of social networking, and is it really such a recent phenomenon?

BBC tech correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones (@ruskin147) presents a mini-series on Radio 4 and is probably quite involved in the research too. You can follow progress on the making of the series on Facebook: BBC Secret History of Social Networking.
