Mobile phone driving jail threat

Motorists caught driving dangerously while using a mobile phone face being sent to jail under new guidelines. At the least, disqualification from driving for a minimum period of 12 months followed by an extended retest is mandatory.

This isn't so much a change in the law as an affirmation of the consequences of driving whilst using a mobile phone, including hands-free and sat-nav devices. Dangerous driving will be much more easy to prove if the driver in the dock is shown to have been using such a device at the time.

This change is part of the Crown Prosecution Service's new policy on bad driving, and here is their press release on the policy.
